Space heater safety for a Central Illinois winter

Springfield winters bring plenty of gray, freezing days, and a portable heater is an easy way to warm a home office or a drafty bedroom without cranking the thermostat. Heaters are also a common cause of winter house fires, so it pays to set a few ground rules.

Choose a heater with built-in safeguards

  • Tip-over shutoff: turns the heater off if it's knocked over.
  • Overheat protection: cuts power when internal parts get too hot.
  • Cool-touch housing: a smart choice around kids and pets.
  • Safety certification: look for a UL, ETL or similar listing mark.

Keep a three-foot zone

Leave at least three feet of open space around the heater, away from curtains, bedding, furniture and paper. Set it on a hard, level floor, not on a rug or carpet.

Plug directly into the wall

  • Skip extension cords and power strips entirely.
  • Don't share the outlet with other high-power appliances.
  • Stop using it if the plug feels hot or the cord looks worn.

Turn it off when you walk away

Switch the heater off when you leave the room or go to sleep. A timer or thermostat setting makes this automatic.

Back it up with alarms and a plan

Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly and swap batteries at least once a year. Keep a fire blanket in the kitchen and make sure everyone knows two ways out of each room.
